What does an oxygen facial really do?

What happens during the treatment, what you can realistically expect to see, and when a different treatment may suit you better.

What does an oxygen facial do, in plain terms? A typical oxygen facial cleanses and gently exfoliates your skin, then uses a stream of pressurized oxygen to carry hydrating serums onto it, so many people leave with skin that feels softer and looks fresher and brighter. It can be a lovely way to revive dull or dehydrated skin, but it won’t fix deep wrinkles, scarring or dark spots, and the glow is temporary.

What an oxygen facial is

“Oxygen facial” is a broad name rather than one fixed recipe. Spas use it for treatments in which oxygen is part of how products reach the skin, usually as a fine, pressurized stream that carries a serum across the face. Many versions pair that with a cleansing and exfoliating step, so the serum goes onto freshly prepared skin.

The version we offer, the Hydro Oxygen Facial, combines both. It begins with hydrodermabrasion: a medical-grade device cleanses and exfoliates using water and gentle suction rather than crystals. Pressurized oxygen then infuses hydrating serums. The whole treatment is non-invasive, so there are no needles and nothing pierces the skin.

What happens, step by step

At Mica, a Hydro Oxygen Facial takes 60 minutes. If you have never had a device-based facial, it helps to know the order of things, because each stage feels a little different. Most of it is simply restful, though you may notice a light suction while your skin is being exfoliated. If anything feels uncomfortable at any stage, say so and your practitioner can adjust it.

  • A short conversation first: how your skin usually behaves, which products you use (mention retinol or exfoliating acids), and what you would like to improve.
  • The exfoliating stage, where a spiral-shaped tip passes over your face with oxygen-infused water while gentle suction clears away what the tip loosens.
  • The oxygen stage, where a pressurized stream of oxygen infuses hydrating serums suited to your skin.
  • Back to your day, usually with no downtime. Any mild redness tends to fade shortly afterwards.

What it can do

Go in with realistic expectations and an oxygen facial is easy to enjoy. Many people find their skin feels softer and smoother straight away, looks fresher, and has more of a glow. Exfoliation lifts away dull surface cells, which can help skin reflect light more evenly, and the serums can leave it comfortably hydrated rather than tight.

Good hydration can also make fine, dry-looking lines less noticeable for a while. Because our Hydro Oxygen Facial is gentle, suitable for all skin types (sensitive skin included) and typically needs no downtime, it is a sensible choice when you want your skin looking fresh for a wedding, a photo or a big night out. If it will be your first facial, book it a few days ahead so you can see how your skin responds.

What it can’t do

An oxygen facial works on the surface of the skin, so it has limits. It won’t erase deep wrinkles, restore lost firmness, or meaningfully fade acne scars, sun damage or dark spots. Nor is it a treatment for skin conditions: if you live with rosacea or eczema, or are under a doctor’s care for your skin, check with your doctor before booking any facial.

It is tempting to picture the oxygen itself nourishing your skin, but its job in this facial is to deliver the serums. The softer, fresher look most people notice comes mostly from the cleanse, the exfoliation and the hydration. And like any facial, the effect fades gradually as your skin goes through its normal renewal.

If deeper concerns are your priority, other treatments are designed for them. Laser skin care for spots and scarring is used for brown spots, sun damage, visible blood vessels and scars, often over a series of sessions, while our wrinkle reducing treatment focuses on lines and wrinkles.

Who it suits and how often to book

An oxygen facial is a good match if your skin looks dull or tired, feels tight or dehydrated after travel, late nights or months of dry indoor air, or you simply want a gentle reset before an event. Acne-prone skin can be treated too. Check with us first if your skin is sunburned, irritated or broken, if you have just had another skin treatment, or if you use prescription skin medication.

How often you come back depends on your skin, your goals and how it responds to the first session, so there is no rule to follow. After your first visit, your practitioner can suggest a schedule that makes sense for you. In between, a steady routine of gentle cleansing, moisturizer and daily sunscreen does much of the work of keeping skin comfortable.

Questions, answered

How long do the results of an oxygen facial last?

The effect is temporary. The fresh, hydrated look is usually most noticeable right after your facial and over the next few days, then gradually softens as your skin renews itself. A simple routine at home helps keep your skin comfortable, and your practitioner can suggest when to come back.

Does an oxygen facial have side effects?

It is gentle and typically has no downtime, since nothing pierces the skin. You may notice mild redness, which fades shortly. If your skin reacts easily, say so at the start so the treatment can be adjusted.

What should I avoid after an oxygen facial?

For a day or so, skip scrubs, exfoliating acids and retinol, and wear sunscreen when you go outside, because freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive to the sun. If anything feels uncomfortable afterwards, give us a call.

Is an oxygen facial good for acne-prone skin?

It can be. Our Hydro Oxygen Facial is suitable for acne-prone skin, and a thorough cleanse may leave congested skin feeling clearer. It isn’t an acne treatment, though: point out any active or sore breakouts so your practitioner can work around them, and see your doctor about acne that keeps coming back.

Is an oxygen facial covered by insurance?

No. Facials, including the Hydro Oxygen Facial, are cosmetic treatments and are not covered by insurance. Direct billing at Mica is for massage by a Registered Massage Therapist.
